FYI – this video was 599.9 MB out of the camera (.mov format), with a run time of 7 minutes 51 seconds. A movie that size took about 2.5 hours to upload to Youtube (yikes!). If you are interested in seeing pictures from this camera I will be posting them at this link: fakeconomy.com I just got the Canon S90 PowerShot and I wanted to show you the camera since there hasn’t been a lot of in-depth videos posted about the features. The S90 is basically a scaled down translation of the G11 Canon’s – an Elph with full manual controls. The camera is built very nearly completely out of metal and has a sturdy build quality to it. The front of the camera has a manual control dial which can be fully customized to control anything from apeture to exposure compensation. The LCD is sweet impressive too, honestly wide for a camera with brilliant resolutions, the camera also has image stabilization and a f2.0 lens with a 28mm-105mm focal range.

Thanks i luv it. I juz bought one.
Best review of the S90 on the web, including the professional websites. Thanks for doing this. Brilliant.
thank you for your review,
I like your T-shirt.
I mentioned this in the video…
Color swapping video can be done in Adobe After Effects. It could also probably be done in Final Cut Studio (there is an entire program called Color that is part of Final Cut Studio).
For pictures you can swap colors in Photoshop, GIMP (a free program), and to some degree in Lightroom.
Google it online and you should find tutorials on how to do this.
hi there .. i want to know what kind of program do you use to do post processing for colour swap and colour accent function .. thanks !
The falloff in F stop is pressing when you start zooming in.
@ 28mm the widest gap is f2.0
@ 105mm the widest gap is f4.9
Unfortunatly I can’t tell you exactly how the f stop lines up with focal length but here is an approximation:
28mm – f2
35mm -f2.8
50mm – f3.5
85mm – f4.5
105mm – f4.9
In person I usually shoot wide, so I never have much of a problem. This will be a problem if you shoot zoomed in lowlight. You might want to consider the Panasonic LX3 for that scenario.
Thanks for taking the effort for doing this review,it really is very very helpful for people considering buying a camera like this, your review is very informative, thanks alot!!Brilliant!
Your videos are really useful for getting a excellent thought about the camea; thanks for taking the time to do so. I was hoping you could help, what’s the focal range that you can use the lens at f/2.0 — 28mm to ?? And then is f/4.9 the widest afterwards for the rest of the range up to 105mm?
1 GB = 12 minutes @ 640 x 480
If you shoot 320 x 240 then you should be able to get 36 minutes/GB (according to Canon).
So it depends mostly on how much interval you have on your SD card.
What’s the maximum minutes of video can you record on this camera
Hey, I’m not sure why you are having that issue but I suspect it might be one of two things.
1) I’ve found that I needed to install the Canon software that came with the camera before I could transfer my pics to the computer, may have something to do with that.
2) Did you format the SD card you were using before taking those pics? If you didn’t it may be that the files got corrupted.
It may not be either of the above but these are my best guesses. Try formatting the card next time.
Thanks for the reviews. Just got the S90 and was wondering If you would know why I’m getting this message on my computer when I’m uploading metaphors with a formatted card ” The files appear to be unsupported or smashed”
@MattAndi
I’ve read those comments about the back control ring. In person I don’t have a problem with it but I reckon people with larger hands may have problems.
I never knew about CHDK but it seems fascinating, if they release a translation for the S90 I’ll review it.
This brings up a excellent question, maybe a lower end camera like a SD880 + CHDK might be a better value than an S90. The only difference would be the optics and controls (not sure how CHDK will integrate w/ the control rings).
thanks for the reviews!
maybe CHDK will come through for this camera. I had CHDK on my a590 and it was fantastic.
I’ve been reading on DPreviews that one of the rings is sweet easily changed causing problems with exposure or ISO. I’m going to see if I can go handle this in a B&M before deciding between this, G11, or FZ38
Thanks for the vids… not many of the S90.
Video seems fine for SD and the sound is perfectly acceptable.
Fantastic review. You’ve really got your review style down pat!
This video quality is perfectly excellent, apart from when you blow it up full screen. Then it’s slapdash. As for the sound, everything sounds fine here. No evaluation. My BIGGEST evaluation over the S90′s video (other than lack of HD) is the lack of autofocus all through panning. There’s really no excuse for the camera not having this. Perhaps Canon could do it via firmware upgrade, but probably won’t. Thanks again for the fantastic work.
