Experimenting with the Sea to Summit Folding Cup and Pinnacle Soloist with the Trangia cookset for baking without an oven. This would be a fantastic selection for baking while camping, backpacking, bike touring, rving and van dwelling. This video focuses on using this simple set up on the trail and camping to bake Betty Crocker Blueberry Muffin Mix with small fuss or mess. Yum! This is a 3 Part Video and my first time video taping a gear test and tutorial so I’m interested in receiving uplifting comments and questions:-) I look forward to filming more tests in a No Mess Trail Cooking Series. This was filmed with a Canon Powershot S5 with articulating viewfinder using a Gorilla Pod. Thanks for watching!! I appreciate your time and attention in viewing this exploration in alternative baking. Warmly, Laurie

@KittchenSink Fantastic hammock set up! I’m also an avid armchair minimalist which hasn’t really translated to the field yet…!!

@LoveRise Ive been a ground dweller ever since i was a kid, and as you may guess by the name, when i rucksack i carry everything (inc the kitchen sink – well very nearly) in a 150 litre Karrimor Sabre bergen. Just though and after years of heart ops, im trying to improve the load greatly. I use a DD Travel hammock and DD Tarp. Hanging is all new to me so im still kinda ironing out the creases right now. Lol hey!, for this video you can have the whole chocolate bar. :) thank you

What an inspirational comment. Thank You! I like the thought you place forth and like that you are a hammock camper as I am also at times. What type of hammock do you prefer? And yes cutting down the recipe reduces cook time yet I would be reluctant to bake over an open flame unless you relish that smokey flavor. And hey…I’ll take part of that chocolate bar!! Celebrate your life…Laurie

Ohhhh i can see it now, end of the day, camp set up on a cold eve, one of those unfurled into my mess kit complete with a whole melted bar of chocolate over the top just before i climb into my hammock. mmmm that looks really excellent. i reckon it extracted perfectly. Though i reckon ill be using a real fire as 30 minutes of fuel is rather excessive when backpacking. If you cut the quantity can you cut the cook time do you reckon? Brilliant video thank you for that

@irussb why thank you! It’s really a fun process!

Fantastic videos Thanks for sharing with us.

That is sooo cool Drak! You’ve probably used the x-mug more than I have now. What was your favorite cake or muffin mix that you used in the cup? I’d like to try brownies but I’m not sure how they would come out?? Thanx for following up on this! Warmly, Laurie

@LoveRise It came out awe-inspiring! I did this while traveling the last few weeks and it was a fantastic baking thought and I and my wife both fell in like with the thought. This turned out to be an thought we used at least 10 times with all sorts of types of muffin and cake mixes that use only water!
Thanks for sharing this fantastic thought!

Thanks for watching and your commentary. And yes you could use a cozy if you wanted to. You would just have to experiment with timing. And yes I’ve watched every one of Tinny’s videos and have bought two of his stoves to add to my addictive collection and since there is no 12 step program for gear addiction, I’m joyously stuck with it! looks excellent, I haven’t read all the comment so this maybe a repeat, to save on fuel boil water with your muffin mix in, then take off the stove and place your pot into a pot cozy and let the cooking end in that. Cozys are made of silver bubble wrap, simple to find instructions on the net. For more back pack cooking thoughts check out user minibulldesign and search his videos.

Hey Thank You! I’ve watched some of your videos as well and appreciate your thoughts and I definately agree the X-Mug by sea to summit is the way to go if you have a pinnacle cookset.

Very fascinating new twist on the whole “trail baking” thing. In fact the cup works quite a bit better than most Wax/Parchment design! Thanks for posting!

I appreciate your authenticity Jason and you humble me with your greetings especially coming from such an innovative leader in the ultralight backpacking community.

    Thank you!

    With much appreciation,

    @LoveRise
    Hi Laurie,
Skilled video producer? Might be time to visit the optometrist. ;) But I like your style and reckon you have a fantastic on camera assumed role to really give up some excellent content to wannabe trail chefs. I’m not interested in baking at all but you made me interested. That’s a sign of excellent talent. Keep it up and I look forward to seeing more!

  19. LoveRise on December 21, 2010 at 1:47 am

Wow Jason that is quite a compliment coming from such a skilled and inspiring video producer as yourself! I appreciate you taking the time from your own endeavors to watch my No Mess Trail Baking Series. I also appreciate the send by e-mail you sent with the insightful commentary you shared with me! I know you are probably more of a minimalist than I am but I do hope you give it a try sometime and film your results!! Until then…celebrate life! Laurie

Wow Laurie! Fantastic video. I never bake on the trail but this looks like something even I could do. I might just have to try it some time!

  21. pyroman675 on December 21, 2010 at 3:25 am

@LoveRiseya i guess. have you ever tried making pan cakes ?? a got ya there. i tried it it works reat. but there a small doughy though but once it hits the maple syrup soaks it right up and mMmMmM it is excellent.

  22. LoveRise on December 21, 2010 at 3:36 am

Hey thanks for watching! Yes, I have seen videos on that method but I’m not a fantastic fan of the plastic bags because of the high temps being used. Yet, in moderation it’s probably fine. I just like the sea to summit x-mug with the Pinnacle soloist because the fit is so perfect and that cup fits so compactly when folded. I just bought another one last night when I attended a Bike repair clinic at REI…I can never get enough of a excellent thing!! Celebrate Life! Laurie

  23. pyroman675 on December 21, 2010 at 3:37 am

ahh cute puppy man he/she’s so cute. hey have you ever tried that with a plastic fruit bags that are very thin and all you do to get the muffin out is slide the bag out and un-rap it and bam. but thats a still a excellent set up though. fantastic video

  24. LoveRise on December 21, 2010 at 3:45 am

That is a very insightful comment! I wasn’t plotting to do it uncovered, I was more interested in how much quicker it would have cooked if I had blocked the steam holes in the lid of the pinnacle. Yet, I’m really glad you brought that up about the boiling of eggs uncovered so I don’t have to make that mistake. Thanks for watching!!

  25. altairPDX on December 21, 2010 at 4:14 am

Fantastic video – I’ll have to try my next steam baking project with this cup.

Did you mention possibly trying uncovered? I would hesitate to do that. When you’re boiling eggs in a bag, if you cook with the pot uncovered, the sides of the pot get too hot and can melt plastic. Leaving the pot covered coats the side of the pot with steam which keep the sides at a lower temperature.
