Sony digital cameras with “Exmor R” CMOS sensor take brilliant still photos in low light, but the video performance under low light conditions is worse than that of competing cameras with CCD sensors. This video is a direct comparison between Sony DSC-HX5V and Canon PowerShot SX-210 cameras. For this video the Sony camera was set to record in MP4 mode at 720p resolution to match Canon. Both files were converted to Apple ProRes 422 format to edit in Final Cut Pro. The output file that was uploaded to YouTube was encoded in MP4 format with 10000 kbps bit rate. Sony DSC-TX7 camera has the same poor low-light performance as HX5V. I would not recommend either of these two cameras to anyone concerned with the video quality in low light.

@aienpotter82 Question me anything you want..I have the Sx210…
@TheRealEmskiHelp Thanks
@rpasampaio Yes.
@kasnaw77 Precisely. Higher resolution can only adversely affect the light sensitivity of the sensor.
@rpungin2 ..but you didn’t shoot the Sony video @1080 (as you say so yourself)…

@rpungin2 …but you haven’t shot the sony video @ 1080 (as you say above). I reckon a fairer assessment of the camera’s capability would be to shoot the sony at its max performance i.e. @1080 and then compare. Can you please tell me if there is any difference in the quality of video when you shoot with the sony @1080.
Thanks! Now this video convinced me to buy the Sony HX5V for sure!
@aienpotter82 you found numerous video samples and not still picture samples because….. you are looking on youtube… Google is your better alternative.
can anyone who owns sx210 help me? i found numerous video samples but i cant seem to really found samples of still pictures..are the still pictures taken ok? im asking because i reckon i made my choice of getting this sx210, but it wouldve been better if i question someone who owns it, lol im desperate to know because this camera is not cheap, and i must be sure that the price worths it…please help me, thanks
Could you please tell me something about de Canon sx210 Macro mode? Does it has a super macro?
@NickRivasHD That’s exactly what the “barrel distortion” comment meant
I reckon for a fairer comparison of barrel distortion both cameras need to be set to the same angle of view. Sony was set to a significantly wider angle – which helps fit a huge party into the shot without going too far from them. I reckon this tradeoff with barrel distortion is really worth it – I believe it does disappear on this Sony if you zoom in a bit.
The only thing I don’t like about the Sony videos is that it makes the corners of the video round, idk how to clarify it, for example in the beginning the curtain is ovalish in the Sony vid
@snatchyme
I have to agree that Sony is better. I had a ancient Sony DSC 600 (2005-6mp)
I just got a new Canon sx120 10mp. You would reckon in 2010 the Canon would be better. Nope, TOO MUCH NOISE. I never really was picky about grain but the Canons are BAD, taking it back to store. I’d go Sony Over canon in pocket digitals.
Just because a camera records at 1080i does not mean the video quality is better. Just like higher megapixels in a small camera does not mean better image quality. The above is especially right in dark environments. The video speaks for itself, doesn’t it?

cont..it doesnt want to load my videos . im getting frustrated -_-
hey! can you msg me to answer. i was wondering when i import my videos to my comp it says that the format isnt valid or like the data ist valid. it loads my photos but noy
I’m getting the Sony!
right. but this is a photo camera, meant for photos. if i want video i will get a camcorder, therefore picture quality is vital for this camera more than video quality. i had a sony dscw200. what would you recommend for photos with lot of details and no noise
@snatchyme This video compares Canon SX210 to Sony DSC-HX5V specifically. It shows that DSC-HX5V has more noise and produces darker video in low light conditions than SX210. In your comment you never specified which Sony camera you were discussion about. Also you are starting to talk about “details in photos” which has nothing to do with video.
@rpungin2 no, just that the camera has too much grain on photos, even on videos (but only in dark areas). not a excellent camera if you want lot of details in photos, way too much noise when you zoom in just 125% on the picture
@snatchyme Are you saying that my video is fake?
don’t believe this video. I got lured into buying sx210 and the low light quality is horrible, its grainy as shit. I recorded a few concerts and they all have so much noise, I never had this problem with my older sony camera. The video is even much better and has more details on the sony cam. Yes the canon gives you better zoom and audio quality, but I have not been able to take one excellent picture with the sx210, too much grain even when you zoom in on picture at 2x. Stay away from sx210
This shows yet again, that I am not impressed with this Sony’s model or so far, any of their cameras seen on the shelves that are grossly “overpriced”. My Samsung WB650 with GPS isn’t that much of an outstanding piece but visit my page and watch and take note of the impact and fantastic sounds captured on Santana’s recent Concert in Oct 05, 2010.
I still am on the lookout for a excellent HD camera soon to boost my entertainment captions at concerts. I have a Sanyo Xacti CG10 that is super but …:((
